Internationalen Studien zufolge können Fahrradhelme die Verletzungshäufigkeit um mindestens 60 % reduzieren. Vier von zehn Radfahrern, die bei Unfällen sterben, hätten mit einem Helm gar überlebt. Trotz dieser alarmierenden Statistik verzichtet die überwiegende Mehrheit der Radfahrer immer noch darauf, einen Helm zu tragen. Entweder wird der Helm als sperrig empfunden, man findet ihn unpraktisch oder es werden ästhetische Gründe angeführt.
Im Gegensatz zu traditionellen Schutzhelmen handelt es sich bei dem "unsichtbaren" Helm um eine Vorrichtung, die wie ein Kragen um den Hals getragen wird und einen zusammengefalteten Airbag enthält. Bei einem Unfall registrieren die Bewegungssensoren die anormalen Bewegungen des Radfahrers und senden ein Signal an den Airbag. Dieser entfaltet sich daraufhin innerhalb einer Zehntelsekunde und bedeckt wie eine Haube nahezu den gesamten Kopf und Halsbereich des Radfahrers, lässt dabei aber das Sichtfeld frei.

Airbag as bicycle helmet
The Swedish design house Hövding has invented an air-bag-bicycle-helmet which is carried like a scarf around the neck. Motion sensors and microcontrollers form senses and brain of the inflatable helmet.
According to international studies bicycle helmets can reduce the injury frequency about at least 60%. Four of ten cyclists who die in accidents would have even survived with a helmet. In spite of this alarming statistics the prevailing majority of the cyclists still refuses to carry a helmet. Either the helmet is felt as unwieldy, one finds it impractical or aesthetic reasons are stated.
In contrast to traditional protective helmets, the "invisible" helmet is a device which is carried like a collar around the neck and contains a folded air bag. In an accident the motion sensors register the anormalen movements of the cyclist and send a signal to the air bag. As a result this blows up within one tenth second and covers like a bonnet nearly the whole head and cervical area of the cyclist, besides, releases the view field.
