Die von den Gebrüdern Grimm geschriebene Version machte es weltweit populär. Obwohl Hameln einen feinen mittelalterlichen Stadtkern mit einigen bemerkenswerten Gebäuden besitzt, wird die hauptsächliche touristische Anziehungskraft durch die Sage des Rattenfängers gebildet. An den Sommersonntagen wird das Märchen von Schauspielern im Stadtzentrum aufgeführt.

The town is famous for the folk tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, a medieval story that tells of the rat-catcher and of the tragedy that befell the town in the thirteenth century: Hamelin lost all children of the town. The version written by the Brothers Grimm made it popular throughout the world. Although Hamelin has a fine medieval town with some remarkable buildings, the main tourist attraction is the tale of the Pied Piper.
