Sankt Petersburg

Saint Petersburg (short: SPb, Russian: Санкт-Петербург) is a city of Russia located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. It is informally known as Piter (Пи́тер). SPb is the northernmost city of the world with over one million people. SPb is often described as the most Westeuropean city of Russia.
From 1924 to 1991, in honor of Lenin, the founder of the Soviet Union, the city was called Leningrad (Ленинград).

    Neva mit Schlossbrücke
Quite a busy little harbor. I love the taxi ferries. It seems a delightful way of getting from one city to another; and I notice there is also a lovely cruise liner in the background. I was amazed at the number of international cruise liners on the river from St. Petersburg to Helsinki which Lara had photographed on her recent trip to Helsinki. It appears the cruise liners are doing exceptionally well during this time of economic chaos.

    Luv ya!

The harbour of St. Petersburg is an important access of Russia to the Baltic Sea. It is the most important port of Russia for the transportation of goods of Eastern Europe and the whole North Asian region.
The number of container ships is therefore much higher than the number of ferries.
Unfortunately I have no pictures of Petersburg harbour.
Maybe we should ask Lara to shoot some photos of the large docks ;o)))

I will definitely ask Lara to get me a few photos of the large container docks. I believe there were one or two in the photos she took as she embarked upon her cruise to Helsinki. The port from which she left, however, appeared to be all ferries and ocean liners. She sent me some fascinating photos of her cruise. Among them was how the locks operate. Even though I've seen a number of locks--including here in Ottawa--I never knew how they operated. She photographed the procedure from beginning to end. I was quite intrigued. There were a number of container barges on her Helsinki trip. In fact, there was one directly behind her ocean liner in the lock. At first, I thought the barge was going to be in the rear lower deck of her ship. There is no room--in any direction--for anyone to change their mind or make a navagational error. Lara always tries to get photos for me each week. With the extreme heat, humidity and storms Russia's been experiencing the past few weeks, it's been difficult.

    Monument Nikolaus I
A truly magnificent monument which seems to have a little of everything incorporated into the design.

The 6-meter-high bronze monument has only two bases - the hind legs of the horse!
The Czar Nicholas is presented in uniform of the cavalry guard. The sculptor emphasizes his tendency to drill barracks, his pride and cruelty.
The figures at the base should be faith, wisdom, justice and the wife and the daughter of the Tsar.
Large pictures below represent the most significant events of the reign of Czar Nicholas I.

To view this monument in person must be an overwhelming experience. The sculptor was presented with a plan to include an abundance of historical moments in the life of one individual--in one monument. I think he completed his commission far and above anything that could ever be expected. The monuments, sculptures, etc., dedicated to the outstanding individuals throughout all of Europe, are so grand and magnificent. Their beauty far exceeds anything created in today's world. Nowadays, the sculptures/monuments consist of some twisted metal, a slab or two of marble in some weird shape, which do not attract my attention. In essence, I don't like modern art--even though I make every attempt to view and try to appreciate it. One great advantage Europe has--art wise--is you don't have to visit a museum to see art. It's on every street, building, and everywhere you look. I hope this outstanding method of displaying fine art will never go out of style. It would be a great loss to the world.

    St. Petersburg City
Such an elegant building. I love the shade of aqua and the gold elements really set it off beautifully. It appears they are in the process of performing maintenance on this wonderful treasure, as well.

The building is a part of the Winter Palace Hermitage. The elegant facade was renovated at rhe right hand side when I shot the photo.

Lara (St. Petersburg) has often spoken of this building in her notes to me. It is even prettier than I had imagined. Whenever you are on one of your photographic adventures, do you ever take photos of the interior of any of the buildings? I downloaded EarthGoogle a week or two ago, and I was able to view some of the interior rooms of a few of the gorgeous buildings. The beauty, elegance, and decor are breathtaking, as well as overwhelming. I could spend a day just absorbing the numerous details which went into making such a room so elegant. In addition to all the gold incorporated into the walls and ceilings, the exquisite mouldings and all the delicate carvings are what set these interiors apart from anything else in the world. Other European cities (Vienna) have similar, elegant interiors, but not to the extent of all those in Russia. You've done an excellent job of capturing so much of the beauty of these two cities. I can understand why you enjoy returning often.
        Luv ya bunches!

Karl M., Karl W., Toon & Frank auf Kanalbrücke
A very unique capture of the taxi boat. There certainly isn't much clearance from the top of the boat to the bottom of the overpass. There's definitely no room for error when navigating down this canal.

    Luv ya!

    Kirche in der Festung Peter&Paul
A beautiful church. What is the main religion of the Russian population?

The church is the "Peter and Paul" cathedral.
The main religions in Russia are the Christianity (above all the Russian-orthodox faith) as well as the Islam. In addition, numerous others are represented like Judaism, Buddhism and traditional religious directions of some ethnic groups.
Nevertheless, at least one third of the Russian population calls itself atheists!

Lovely mosiac tile. This, I would assume, is of the Muslim faith (?) which appears to still be a work in progress?

My dear Sweet Caroline, the blue mosque was opened 1913 by the Tatar religious community in Petersburg. It seemed, that it is still in use.

    Nevskija Tor
An attractive entrance (?). It appears this facility is in the process of being steam cleaned after many years of pollution, etc. The section which has been cleaned is quite lovely. When the project is completed, it will all be quite attractive. I must say, I'm impressed at how well St. Petersburg, as well as Moscow have maintained their lovely buildings throughout the years. Since both appear to be very large industrial cities, I imagine the cleaning and maintenance of all the lovely structures is an ongoing project. They are truly to be commended for their outstanding efforts in this regard.
    Luv ya!

    Segelschiff auf der Neva
What a gorgeous sailboat. It looks more like one of the old steamboats which still travel the Mississippi River nowadays. I'll bet that is beautiful at night when it's all lit up.

    Festung Peter&Paul
A lovely view of what appears to be a residential area. I love the yellow Church steeple, as well as the dome. I like the way the city has canals flowing throughout. I don't think, however, they were necessarily called for in the building of the city, but they were Mother Nature's way of contributing to the beauty of this lovely city.
    Luv ya!

St. Petersburg was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great in a swamp. The canals by the model of Amsterdam were necessary to make the swamp be buildable.
On the photo you see the oldest part of St. Petersburg. It is the fortress "Peter and Paul".
