• The Minden Fortress was expanded from 1813 to 1850 as a Prussian fortress. It was intended to secure the Prussian western provinces against the Kingdom of Hanover and the Weser breakthrough at the Porta Westfalica. In 1866, Prussia annexed the Kingdom of Hanover, which meant that Minden Fortress lost its reason to exist and was abandoned in 1873. Some buildings of the former fortifications have survived to this day.
