Die Burg stammt aus dem 11. Jahrhundert. Im 15. Jahrhundert wurde die Burg modifiziert und erweitert. Die Burg wechselte mehrfach die Besitzer. Besitzer waren Grafen aus Lippe, Schaumburg, Everstein oder Schwalenberg.
