      Oh no, dear MarBess! The woman at the well is not bad! 
      "Bad" is the German foreword to spas (курорты). There are several spas in the Weserbergland: 
      Bad Meinberg, Bad Salzufflen, Bad Karlshafen, Bad Pyrmont ...
      ... and my mother had that kind of hairstyle. :-)
