Trieste

Trieste is a North-Italian port in upper Adriatic directly on the border to Slovenia. It is a capital of the autonomous region Friaul-Julisch Veneto and the province Trieste. 1382 to 1918 Trieste belonged to the territory of the Habsburgs (House Austria). It was their most significant commercial harbour and base of the navy. Also, as part of Italy since 1918 Trieste remained culturally and historically a place of meeting of cultures, languages, ethnic groups and religions ('Città mitteleuropea').
