• Honstein castle was built around 1120. With a total length of 140 meters and a width of up to 68 meters, this castle ruin is one of the largest in the Harz region. The castle became the ancestral seat of the Counts of Honstein. In 1412, a family dispute led to the so-called Flegler War, as a result of which the Counts of Honstein lost their family castle. Hohnstein Castle came into the possession of the Counts of Stolberg. In 1627 the castle was set on fire and destroyed by imperial troops.
In the course of the following centuries, the castle ruins fell into disrepair.
